Rachel Nicholls, former Head of Trade Marks at National Law Firm Shoosmiths, has joined SONDER IP as a Director.
Rachel has almost 20 years’ experience in assisting clients with the entire range of trade mark work throughout the world, including pre-filing searching, IP strategies, examination procedures, oppositions, cancellations and invalidity actions.
Many of these years were spent working alongside Matt and we are excited to renew our working relationship.
Rachel answers some questions about Sonder IP…
Why did you join Sonder IP ?
“Matt and I have worked together for more years than either of us cares to remember! Between us we have over 30 years’ experience in IP and we’re driven by the same desire to get to know the aims and ambitions of each and every client, and to support them with their intellectual property regardless of their size or industry. We push each other to be the best that we can be, and strive to deliver consistent, ethical and expert advice on all aspects of intellectual property. We have a mutual respect for each other and our clients, but we’re not afraid to tell each other when we’re wrong!
“But it’s not just the relationship with Matt that prompted the move, it’s the relationship with my clients too. For too long my relationship with my clients has been dictated by high hourly billing rates, unmanageable billing targets and false fixed price structures, none of which reflect the individual and unique needs of my clients. That’s not how I want my client relationships to be; I want my clients to give me a call without fear of a large bill. I want my clients to know that they will get the best, strategic and commercial advice whenever and however they want it. I want to integrate into my client’s team, and not be a faceless person at the end of the phone. Sonder offers me the flexibility and freedom to work with my clients in a new way, and a way that suits them and their business needs.
WHAT’s different about Sonder IP ?
“Put simply, Sonder is transforming the client relationship. Sonder gives me the opportunity to talk to my clients and listen to what they’re saying. A quality conversation can go a long way, but not when the clock is constantly ticking, and when the meter is already running. At a time when pressure is at its highest on inhouse teams to demonstrate their worth despite reduced budgets and team numbers, my clients are looking for me to add real value to their business. Sonder lets me stop the clock and have a different kind of conversation; to actually understand the needs of my clients, to spot where I can really make a difference, and to agree a way of working which meets their individual needs. I like to call it the Sonder Conversation.
“I can work closely with clients to create a bespoke package of service provision – whether it’s a regular on-site provision, a deep dive into their business, a more strategic and commercially sensible approach, more regular day to day contact, or something completely different, Sonder gives me the freedom that both me and my clients need to achieve that trusted relationship. My clients can be confident of complete transparency on fees and costs as we use charging methods that are tailored to their individual needs – whether it’s fixed fees, a retainer, a bulk buy, or a simple pay as you go arrangement, Sonder is open to all options. I‘m passionate about IP, and with the Sonder Way, it’s easy for my clients to be passionate too. It’s incredibly exciting to be part of such a forward-thinking firm.”
